The United Nations envoy to Syria, Staffan de Mistura, said on Tuesday that Syrian Kurds should not be ignored in the ongoing peace talks and efforts to find a solution to the 6-year-old crisis in Syria.

The UN Special Envoy stressed that Kurdish representatives “must be allowed to take part in drafting Syria’s new constitution.”

The United Nations has recently hosted two sets of talks on drafting a new constitution for Syria.

Syrian opposition groups have participated in the talks in Lausanne, according to Western diplomats.

On Monday, de Mistura told a news conference that agreements to de-escalate the fighting in Syria could simplify the conflict and help to stabilize the country.

However, he stressed that such accords must be an interim measure and avoid partition.

Speaking at the start of five days of peace talks in Geneva, de Mistura said discussions were being held in Amman to monitor implementation of a ceasefire for southwest Syria brokered by the United States and Russia, the first peacemaking effort of the war by the US government under President Donald Trump.
