BERLIN – The German news agency DPA reports a member of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) was arrested in the province of North Rhine-Westphalia on Monday.

The PKK-member was using the codename Kerim and reportedly had a leading role in the PKK. German security officials say the 50-year old Kurd is now under investigation, and is accused of membership of a foreign terrorist organization.

Reportedly, Kerim was responsible for one year for the PKK-sector in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Between June 2013 and between June 2014 the suspect was the region leader and implemented instructions from the PKK-leadership.

According to the German media the PKK is mostly using Germany to recruit people and to collect money for the organization.

Supporters of the PKK have tried to campaign against the PKK ban on the grounds that its one of the most effective groups that fight against the Islamic State (IS). So far, this campaign had no result.

PKK leaders have suggested unless Turkey delists the PKK as a terrorist organization, it would be unlikely for the group to removed from the EU terrorist list.
