Hasakah – More than 15,000 Iraqi refugees have entered Syria’s Kurdish region of Rojava, fleeing violence in Mosul city, Kurdish officials said on Friday.

The number of Iraqi refugees crossing the border into Syria has dramatically increased since the US-led coalition and allied Iraqi forces launched a battle for Mosul in October, in a bid to drive ISIS out of the strategic city.

“Most of the refugees are hosted in al-Hawl Camp in Hasakah Governorate [northeastern Syria],” an official of the Rojava Self-Administration told ARA News.

The Kurdish-led Self-Administration of Rojava confirmed that its local committees in Hasakah have provided thousands of Iraqi families with shelter.

“We are trying to provide the Iraqi civilians with basic aid supplies and safety. Many of them are children and women, who are in urgent need for assistance after suffering deteriorating conditions in Mosul,” a camp administrator told ARA News.

This comes amid intensifying fighting between US-backed Iraqi forces and Islamic State’s (ISIS) militants in western Mosul city. Last week, Iraqi security forces pushed ISIS out of Eastern Mosul after nearly four months of clashes.
